This is something I see online every day. I hear it at networking events. I read it in adverts and I’ve fallen for it myself, not once but lots of times. Want to know what it is so that you don’t waste your time falling for it too?

Get More Leads And Grow Your Business With LinkedIn
You think wow. That sounds good. I’ll have a look into that. You follow the link and watch the video of someone showing you how they have got thousands of leads and made millions of pounds only by using LinkedIn (or whatever platform they happen to be promoting).
You think of the time that’s going to save you. You think of how much you hate posting every day on every platform. If you could get this many leads from just learning how to use 1 platform that would be great wouldn’t it?
The thing is, it is great. It does save you loads of time and effort if you can just concentrate all your efforts in one place. That’s just common sense isn’t it?
But this is what happens – the thing that you don’t even notice is happening…
Can you spot the deception?
You sign up for their LinkedIn challenge and are excited to get started so that you too can get those thousands of leads and millions of pounds.
You then get the link you’ve been waiting for. The link takes you to a private Facebook page where you can ask questions, watch live streams and join in the conversation throughout the challenge. You’re accepted and you’re given an opportunity to introduce yourself to the other members and get settled into the group.
A short while after joining the challenge you will probably receive an email thanking you for joining the challenge and telling you more about what to expect throughout the 10 days (or however long the challenge is for).
Again, you are excited as the email has reiterated how much easier your life will be when you only have to concentrate on one platform. It has probably also given you a couple of extra “bonus” tips to get you started.
Oaky, so what’s wrong with any of this I hear you say..
Nothing, except that this person is not just using LinkedIn are they? So far you have been added to a Facebook group (which means they are also using Facebook as part of their marketing strategy) and they have sent you an automated email (which means they are using email marketing as part of their marketing strategy).
In essence, there is nothing wrong in what they are saying because they are going to teach you how to use LinkedIn (or whichever platform they’ve promoted). But why I get annoyed by this tactic is because…
They are not getting their thousands of leads and making their millions of pounds from just using one platform. They are making their millions from combining all the strategies together – so this means that you are going to have to combine them too if you are going to become as successful as they are.
That’s shocking right?
To be honest, they are marketing in absolutely the right way. They are concentrating on ONE element of what they do to attract your attention. If you are on Facebook they are no doubt on there promoting their Facebook challenge, if you’re on Instagram they will be promoting their Insta challenge and so on.
This is clever marketing because it is solely focused on one thing. The one thing that you are interested in learning how to do. They are taking your specific issue at that particular time and offering you a solution. Brilliant!
I’m not for one moment suggesting that this is NOT something you should be doing with your marketing, because it IS. But, I am suggesting that you should be aware of these tactics when deciding who to learn stuff from.
What is their expertise?
Knowing what you now know, it is going to be a problem for you if you work with a Twitter expert but they haven’t the faintest idea how email marketing works – because you are going to need email marketing to follow up with the leads that your Twitter activity generates.
This means that you will then need to scout around for an email marketing expert who can show you how to automate the responses that you send out to the leads you generate so that you are not spending your whole life on Twitter responding to messages manually.
You are going to need someone who is comfortable in all the online marketing strategies so that you can learn everything you need to know to grow your business, generate more leads and make more sales all in one place.
Many people who advertise challenges on one specific aspect of online marketing are, in fact, experts in all the others too. But many others are not. They may have spent years learning one platform and can therefore teach you how to get the most out of it, but they can’t teach you any other online marketing strategy.
This means you will have to trawl around the internet looking for someone to help you with the next stage, and this can mean losing the leads you have just worked so hard to get as you have not followed up with them in a timely manner.
